Transsexualism or gender identity disorder (GID)

Transsexualism or gender identity disorder (GID) is defined as a strong and persistent cross-gender identification with the patients' discomfort with his/her sex and the sense of inappropriateness in the gender role of that sex (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth revision, text revision). In order to resolve this discomfort, GID is performed together with an hormonal therapy thus changing person's external sexual characteristics to look like a person of the opposite sex. GID has a different statistical prevalence that reflects social and cultural country conditions and the existence of proper registers.
